Cailin Joyce was a 19‑year‑old Ohio State University student who died on December 4, 2025, after complications from a very rare blood disorder linked to the Epstein‑Barr virus (the virus that commonly causes mononucleosis).
What happened
Cailin became ill early in the school year and was eventually diagnosed with a rare blood disorder that severely compromised her immune system and caused significant inflammation and fluid retention in her organs. She spent weeks in the hospital undergoing intensive testing and treatments, including frequent blood work and transfusions, but her condition suddenly worsened and she passed away surrounded by her family.
Who she was
She was a freshman at The Ohio State University and a member of the Ohio State Club Dance Team, remembered by teammates and friends as kind, humble, and deeply passionate about dance. She was also very involved in her Catholic parish community at St. Barnabas in Ohio, especially in youth ministry and parish life.
After her passing
Her parish and school communities organized prayer vigils and shared tributes describing her as a source of joy and faith for those around her. A fundraiser that had been started to support her and her mother with medical and living costs is now also helping cover funeral expenses, reflecting how many people were moved to support her family.
