Cats should not eat raw fish. Raw fish poses several health risks to cats, including contamination from harmful bacteria like salmonella and E. coli, which can cause food poisoning. Additionally, raw fish contains an enzyme called thiaminase that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1), an essential nutrient for cats; a deficiency can lead to serious neurological problems. Raw fish can also carry parasites and toxins, and fish bones present a choking hazard and potential digestive tract injury. It is safer to feed cats cooked fish without added salt, spices, or oils, and fish should only be given occasionally as a treat rather than a staple of their diet.
