Cats can get a disease similar to AIDS in humans called Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), often referred to as feline AIDS. FIV is a viral infection that attacks the cat's immune system, leaving it vulnerable to other infections. It is primarily spread between cats through bite wounds during fights, as the virus is present in the saliva. Casual contact like mutual grooming or sharing food bowls is less likely to transmit the virus. FIV cannot infect humans, and humans cannot infect cats with HIV. Although there is no cure for FIV, infected cats can live reasonably long lives with proper care. Most indoor cats that do not fight with others have a low risk of infection. Testing and monitoring by veterinarians are recommended to manage the disease in infected cats.
