Cats can get COVID-19 from humans. There is evidence that infected people can pass the SARS-CoV-2 virus (which causes COVID-19) to cats through close contact. However, cats usually show only mild symptoms or none at all when infected. Also, there is no evidence that cats significantly spread the virus to humans or other animals. Precautions for people with COVID-19 include avoiding close contact with cats, washing hands before and after touching pets, and having someone else care for the animal if possible. If a cat shows signs of illness after exposure, contacting a veterinarian is recommended. Overall, while cats can contract COVID-19 from humans, the risk of transmission back to humans or widespread infection among cats is very low.
