Cats can indeed have orange eyes. This eye color results from a moderate to high amount of melanin pigment in the iris. Orange eyes appear as a vivid, fiery shade often described as molten copper or autumn sunset hues and are rarer than the more common green, yellow, or blue cat eye colors. Several cat breeds are known for having orange eyes, including the British Shorthair, American Shorthair, Devon Rex, Japanese Bobtail, Maine Coon, and Turkish Van. The intensity of the orange color is due to melanin deposited in the iris, which develops fully by about 12 weeks of age. Orange eyes stand out particularly well against dark fur coats, such as black. This eye color is genetically influenced and can sometimes be linked to coat color genes, such as those that produce ginger fur, which may boost pigment production yielding a matching eye color. Orange or copper eyes are considered one of the rarest solid eye colors in cats but are perfectly natural and harmless.
