Dogs can eat plantains safely if they are cooked and given in moderation. Raw plantains should be avoided because they are hard to digest and can cause stomach issues such as nausea, gas, diarrhea, and vomiting. Cooked plantains (roasted, steamed, boiled, or grilled) are a nutritious treat, providing fiber, vitamins C and B6, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants that can boost the immune system and support digestion in dogs. However, fried plantains or plantain chips are not recommended due to added fats and seasonings, which can cause gastrointestinal upset and other health problems. Always introduce plantains slowly and in small, manageable pieces to avoid choking and monitor for any adverse reactions. Dogs with sugar-processing disorders, like diabetes, should avoid plantains due to their natural sugar content.
