Yes, dogs can get the flu, known as canine influenza or dog flu. It is a highly contagious respiratory disease caused by specific influenza viruses known as H3N2 and H3N8. These viruses are different from the human flu viruses, so dogs cannot catch the flu directly from humans. Dog flu spreads among dogs through respiratory droplets from coughing, sneezing, or barking, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces like water bowls, toys, or kennels. Symptoms in dogs include cough (dry or wet), fever, nasal and eye discharge, lethargy, decreased appetite, and difficulty breathing. Most dogs recover within two to three weeks, but secondary bacterial infections like pneumonia can occur in severe cases. Vaccination and good hygiene can help reduce the risk of infection.
