can dogs have beets

Dogs can eat beets safely but only in moderation. Beets are not toxic to dogs and can offer nutritional benefits such as fiber, vitamins (C, A, B6), folate, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and iron, which can support the immune system, digestion, and skin and coat health. However, beets have a relatively high sugar content and oxalates, which can pose risks for diabetic dogs, overweight dogs, or breeds prone to kidney stones like Yorkshire Terriers or Miniature Schnauzers. Raw beets can be a choking hazard, so they should be cooked or pureed before feeding. Also, avoid feeding dogs pickled, canned, or seasoned beets, as these often contain harmful additives like salt and vinegar. Beet greens (the leaves) are also not recommended due to high oxalate levels that may contribute to kidney problems. Always introduce beets gradually and consult a vet if unsure.
