Dogs can have coconut in small amounts. Coconut flesh and coconut oil are not toxic to dogs and can even offer some health benefits such as healthy fats, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties. However, coconut is high in fat and calories, so feeding too much can cause stomach upset, weight gain, or increase the risk of pancreatitis. The coconut shell and husk should be avoided as they can cause choking or digestive blockages. Coconut water and sweetened coconut products are generally best avoided for dogs. Always introduce coconut cautiously and consult a veterinarian before adding it to a dog's diet, especially if the dog has health issues or is overweight. Treats, including coconut, should only make up up to 10% of a dog's daily calorie intake.
