Dogs should not have onions in any form—raw, cooked, or powdered—because onions contain a compound called N-propyl disulfide that is highly toxic to dogs. This compound damages their red blood cells, leading to hemolytic anemia, which can be severe and potentially fatal. All parts of the onion plant, including the flesh, leaves, juice, and powders, are toxic. Even small amounts can be dangerous, especially for small dogs, and cooking does not reduce the toxicity. If a dog eats onions, symptoms like lethargy, vomiting, pale gums, and weakness may appear, and urgent veterinary care is necessary.
