can dogs have onions

Dogs should not eat onions in any form—raw, cooked, fried, powdered, or as part of any dish. Onions contain a toxic compound called N-propyl disulphide, which damages and destroys dogs' red blood cells, leading to anemia and potentially severe health issues or death. This toxicity affects all parts of the onion plant, including the bulb, leaves, juice, and powders. Even small amounts can be harmful, especially to small dogs or certain breeds like Akitas and Shiba Inus. Symptoms of onion poisoning include decreased appetite, pale gums, lethargy, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapsed condition, and require immediate veterinary attention if observed. Cooking does not reduce the toxicity of onions for dogs, so no form of onion is safe.
