Castor oil can be taken orally as a stimulant laxative to relieve occasional constipation. It works by stimulating the muscles in the intestines to contract and push stool out. Adults and children over 12 can take between 1 to 4 tablespoons (15 to 60 mL) for this purpose. Castor oil acts quickly, usually producing results in 2 to 12 hours. However, it should not be used long-term because regular use can weaken intestinal muscles and lead to chronic constipation. It is also not recommended for pregnant people, young children under 12, older adults over 60, or individuals with certain health conditions like inflammatory bowel disease or appendicitis. Side effects may include cramping, diarrhea, nausea, and reduced nutrient absorption. For frequent constipation, it is better to consult a doctor rather than repeatedly using castor oil.
