Yes, it is possible to get hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) more than once. HFMD is caused by several different kinds of viruses, mainly types of enteroviruses including coxsackievirus A16 and others. After infection, a person develops immunity to the specific virus type they were infected with, but because there are multiple virus types that can cause the disease, a person can be infected by a different virus type later, leading to a second or even multiple occurrences of the disease. Each infection produces immunity only to the particular virus that caused it, not to all types causing HFMD. This explains why recurrence happens, especially in children who may have developing immune systems and higher exposure risk. The symptoms in subsequent infections may be milder or similar to the first episode. HFMD is highly contagious and spreads through contact with infected bodily fluids or contaminated surfaces.
