It is possible to get strep throat without tonsils. Having tonsils increases the risk and severity of strep throat infections, but removing the tonsils (tonsillectomy) does not make a person immune to strep throat. People without tonsils may experience strep throat less frequently and with milder symptoms, but they can still get the bacterial infection in the throat area. The infection can occur in parts of the throat other than the tonsils. Therefore, even after tonsil removal, one can still contract and need treatment for strep throat if exposed to the bacteria.
