Canada's capital is Ottawa. It is located in the southern portion of the province of Ontario, at the confluence of the Ottawa River and the Rideau River. Ottawa serves as the political centre of Canada and houses key institutions including the Parliament of Canada, the Supreme Court, and the office of the Prime Minister. It was chosen as the capital by Queen Victoria in 1857 primarily because of its defensible location, its position on the border between Canada West (Ontario) and Canada East (Quebec), and its relative isolation from the US border, which made it easier to defend from attack. Ottawa is the fourth-largest city in Canada with a metropolitan population of around 1.5 million people and is also known for its cultural institutions and bilingual nature, reflecting both English and French Canada.
