Cantharone Plus is a topical liquid used to treat viral conditions like warts and mollusca. It is a much more potent agent than Cantharone and is available by prescription only. Cantharone Plus contains 30% salicylic acid, 2% podophyllin BP, and 1% cantharidin. Salicylic acid helps to make it easier for the other two products to penetrate the skin. Cantharidin causes skin to blister, right down to the infected layer, and acts directly on cell division to help eliminate infected cells.
Here are some positive and negative aspects of Cantharone Plus:
Positive:
- Leaves no permanent scars
- Painless on application
Negative:
- Not recommended for children under 12 years
- Poisonous and may be fatal if ingested
- Due to its toxicity and potential for misuse, it is not recommended for dispensing or prescribing to patients
