Cape Verde, officially known as the Republic of Cabo Verde, is an island country located in the central Atlantic Ocean, about 570 to 650 kilometers (around 350 to 400 miles) west off the coast of West Africa. It consists of a group of ten volcanic islands forming an archipelago, which is part of the Macaronesia ecoregion. The capital city is Praia, situated on the southern coast of Santiago island. Cape Verde lies roughly west of Senegal, near the Cape Verde Peninsula, which is the westernmost point of continental Africa.
