The capital of Honduras is Tegucigalpa. It is also the largest city and serves as the nation's political and administrative center. Tegucigalpa, often called "Tegus," became the permanent capital of Honduras in 1880 and is located in a mountainous valley in the southern-central highland region of the Francisco Morazán department. The city forms a Central District together with its sister city, Comayagüela, which lies across the Choluteca River, but Tegucigalpa is the main hub for governmental institutions and functions as the effective capital.
