Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages and is sometimes called a "silent cancer." When symptoms do appear, they may include unusual vaginal bleeding (such as bleeding between periods, after sex, after menopause, or heavier/longer periods), abnormal vaginal discharge that can be watery, bloody, or foul-smelling, pelvic pain or pain during intercourse, and pain or swelling in the legs. Advanced cervical cancer may also cause symptoms such as backache, abdominal swelling, difficult or painful urination or bowel movements, leg pain, and fatigue.

Common Symptoms of Cervical Cancer:

  • Vaginal bleeding between periods, after intercourse, or after menopause
  • Heavier or longer menstrual periods than usual
  • Unusual vaginal discharge with possible odor or blood
  • Pelvic pain or pain during sex
  • Pain in the lower back or pelvis
  • Swelling or pain in the legs
  • Advanced symptoms: pain during urination or bowel movements, blood in urine or stool, abdominal swelling, weight loss, fatigue

Early Signs and Detection:

  • Often no early symptoms
  • Detected via regular screening such as Pap smears and HPV testing
  • Visual signs during pelvic exams may include abnormal cervical growths or lesions

Since many cervical cancer symptoms can overlap with other conditions, it's important to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis if experiencing unusual or persistent symptoms. Early detection improves treatment outcomes significantly.
