The Chinese monastery famously known for its style of kung fu is the Shaolin Temple (Shaolin Monastery). It is renowned as the cradle of Shaolin kung fu, a martial art developed and practiced by the Buddhist monks there for nearly 1500 years. The temple is located in Dengfeng County, Henan Province, China. Bodhidharma, an Indian monk, is credited with bringing Chan (Zen) Buddhism to the temple and developing martial arts techniques to strengthen the monks physically, which became the foundation of Shaolin kung fu. The Shaolin Temple uniquely combines Chan Buddhism and martial arts and has become a cultural symbol of kung fu worldwide. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010 due to its historical and cultural significance in Buddhism and martial arts.
