Dogs do have umbilical cords during development in the womb, and puppies are born with their own umbilical cords that typically are chewed or detached by the mother shortly after birth. The cord leaves a small scar on a puppy’s belly, which is the visible evidence of the umbilical connection and is commonly referred to as the belly button. In most dogs, this scar is small and inconspicuous, especially once fur regrows over it. If you ever notice a protruding lump or any sign of infection around the area, a veterinarian should evaluate it as it could indicate an umbilical hernia or another issue.
