Dogs likely do know when a person is pregnant. While there is no conclusive scientific proof, dogs have an extraordinary sense of smell—far superior to humans—with millions of olfactory receptors that can detect subtle hormonal changes in their owner’s body, including pregnancy hormones like HCG, progesterone, and estrogen. These changes alter a pregnant person's scent in ways dogs can pick up on, often before humans even realize they are pregnant. Additionally, dogs are highly attuned to behavioral and emotional shifts in their owners. They pick up on changes in routine, posture, mood, and emotional state, becoming more protective, affectionate, or sometimes anxious in response. Some dogs may also hear fetal heartbeats or sense changes in body temperature. Overall, dogs respond to a combination of scent, sound, and behavioral changes during pregnancy, even if they do not understand the concept of pregnancy itself.
