Female cats do not get periods like human females do. Instead of menstruating with a monthly shedding of the uterine lining and bleeding, female cats experience an estrus cycle, commonly known as being "in heat." During this cycle, cats do not shed their uterine lining but reabsorb it, so bleeding is minimal or absent. Some light discharge may occur, but noticeable or regular bleeding like human periods does not happen. Cats are induced ovulators and their heat cycles usually last 7 to 10 days, recurring seasonally multiple times a year during breeding seasons.
