A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred early Monday morning, September 22, 2025, centered in Berkeley near the corner of Dwight Way and Piedmont Avenue, just a few blocks from the UC Berkeley campus. The quake was strong enough to be widely felt across the San Francisco Bay Area, including San Francisco, Oakland, Albany, Alameda, and as far as Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz. It caused light shaking described like a heavy truck hitting a building, rattling windows and dishes, but no immediate reports of damage or injuries have been confirmed. The earthquake was linked to the Hayward Fault, a significant fault line in the region known for potential large earthquakes. There remains a small chance of further quakes of magnitude 4 or greater in the coming week. Residents reported feeling the shaking as a sharp jolt early in the morning around 2:56 a.m. PDT, and many received early warning alerts on their phones from the ShakeAlert system.
