foundation or concealer first review

When it comes to applying makeup, there is no universal right answer to whether to apply foundation or concealer first. However, most makeup artists believe that foundation should be applied before concealer. The following are some reasons why:

  • Purpose of foundation: One of the major purposes of foundation is to help cover up redness, blemishes, and to even out the appearance of your skin tone. Applying foundation first allows you to see how much coverage you need and prevents you from applying too much concealer and having patches of skin that are too light.

  • Base for other makeup products: Foundation is meant to be the base of everything else, just like the foundation of a house sits at the bottom of the structure. Applying foundation before concealer, or any other products, allows the rest of your makeup to shine.

  • Using less foundation: Applying foundation first means that youll usually end up using less foundation to even out the skins complexion.

However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if you find that your concealer tends to smudge and migrate when you apply foundation second, you can cover problem areas with concealer first, apply powder so it doesn’t move, then put your foundation on.

In terms of ingredients or materials, foundations can be silicone-, water-, or oil-based, and the one you choose will ultimately be based on personal preference or the specific type of beauty look you’re creating. Concealers are often formulated to cover purple or brown under-eye circles and hyperpigmentation, and tend to have red or pink tones to counteract those darker colors.
