Most Latin American revolutionaries came from the social class known as the Creoles. Creoles were people of European (mostly Spanish or Portuguese) descent who were born in the colonies. Although they were often wealthy and educated, they were excluded from the highest levels of colonial government and political power, which were reserved for peninsulares (people born in Spain or Portugal). This exclusion and their commercial and economic frustrations led Creoles to be a dominant force in Latin American independence movements in the early 1800s. Lower classes, including mestizos (people of mixed European and Indigenous descent), indigenous peoples, and enslaved Africans, also participated in the revolutions, especially in social and racial uprisings such as those led by figures like Father Miguel Hidalgo in Mexico. However, the main leadership and organized revolutionary movements were predominantly led by Creoles seeking political power and independence from European peninsular rule.
