Håkan Juholt, the former leader of the Swedish Social Democrats, faced significant political controversy in 2011 that led to his resignation in January 2012. The main issue, known as "Juholtaffären," involved allegations that he had claimed too much allowance for his residence. Although he repaid the claimed amount and a prosecutor later found no clear rules had been broken, the scandal seriously damaged both his and the party's public standing. Additionally, internal conflicts within the party and several other revelations—such as a partner's unknown court case and a personal incident involving a drink in Turkey—further eroded his support. Despite initial backing from party committees, the accumulated pressure forced him to resign after less than a year as party leader. After his political career, Juholt served as Sweden's ambassador to Iceland and South Africa.
