Brown recluse spiders have a body length of about 7 to 12 millimeters (0.25 to 0.5 inches) and a leg span around 2.5 centimeters (1 inch). Adult sizes can range roughly from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch in body length, sometimes a bit larger, with legs extended approaching the size of a quarter coin. They are relatively small spiders with a distinctive violin-shaped mark on their cephalothorax (front body part) and six eyes arranged in pairs rather than the usual eight eyes seen in most other spiders.
