Mitochondria generally range in size from about 0.5 to 1.0 micron (µm) in diameter and can be up to 7 to 8 microns in length, often appearing as rod- shaped or oval organelles. Some mitochondria, called giant mitochondria, can be considerably larger, measuring lengths around 4 microns or more and widths around 0.6 microns, with rare cases reaching lengths of up to 12 to 13 microns. The size varies depending on cell type and physiological conditions, and mitochondria can also form extended network-like structures spreading over tens of microns in some cells.
