Puffins are small to medium-sized seabirds. Their size varies slightly by species:
- Atlantic puffins measure about 10.2 to 11.4 inches (26 to 29 cm) in length and weigh between 10.9 and 19.4 ounces (320 to 550 grams). Their wingspan ranges from 47 to 63 cm (19 to 25 inches). They stand about 8 inches (20 cm) tall on land.
- Tufted puffins, the largest species, are about 14.2 to 15.8 inches (36 to 40 cm) long and weigh 18.3 to 35.3 ounces (520 to 1000 grams).
- Horned puffins weigh around 17 to 22.9 ounces and are slightly smaller than tufted puffins.
In general, an average puffin is about 10 inches tall, roughly the height of a quart jug of milk, and weighs around 400 to 500 grams, similar to the weight of a can of soda. Puffins are often described as small birds with brightly colored beaks, standing at about a foot tall at most.
So, puffins are relatively small birds, about the size of a small book or a soda can in weight, with lengths typically around 10 to 12 inches.
