An ovary in adult women is typically oval-shaped and about the size of a kiwi or a small almond. The average dimensions are approximately 3.5 to 5 centimeters (35 to 50 millimeters) in length, 1.5 to 3 centimeters (15 to 30 millimeters) in width, and 0.6 to 1.5 centimeters (6 to 15 millimeters) in thickness. In terms of volume, a normal ovary ranges from about 3 to 6 milliliters (cc) in reproductive-age women. Ovary size varies with age and life stage: before puberty, ovaries are smaller, usually less than 2 centimeters in length. They grow larger during reproductive years, peaking in size typically until around age 30, and then gradually shrink with age and after menopause, reaching as small as 1.5 to 2 centimeters in length and 1 to 2 cc in volume. The size of each ovary can differ slightly and may change during the menstrual cycle due to follicle growth, which can transiently enlarge parts of the ovary. These variations are normal and reflect ovarian function related to egg development and hormone production.
