The Gambia is a small country in West Africa with a total land area of about 11,300 square kilometers (approximately 4,361 square miles). It is a narrow strip of land following the Gambia River, with a width of less than 50 kilometers (31 miles) at its widest point and stretching almost 300 miles (480 kilometers) inland. The country is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal except for a small coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.
