Greenland is approximately 2.16 million square kilometers (about 836,330 square miles) in size, making it the largest island in the world that is not a continent. It is more than three times larger than the U.S. state of Texas and about one-quarter the size of the entire United States. Greenland stretches roughly 1,660 miles (2,670 km) from north to south and over 650 miles (1,050 km) from east to west at its widest point. Despite its vast size, about 80% of Greenland is covered by an ice sheet, substantially reducing the habitable land area. Its significant landmass and strategic Arctic location make Greenland notable geographically and politically.
