Madagascar is a very large island, the fourth largest in the world. It covers about 587,040 square kilometers (approximately 226,660 square miles) of land, with a total area including water around 591,896 square kilometers (228,531 square miles). The island stretches approximately 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) from north to south and about 570 kilometers (350 miles) from east to west at its widest point. Its coastline is about 4,828 kilometers (around 3,000 miles) long. Madagascar is slightly bigger than metropolitan France and almost twice the size of the US state of Arizona. It ranks as the 46th-largest country overall and is the second-largest island country in the world.
