Malta is a small island country in the Mediterranean Sea with a total area of about 316 square kilometers (122 square miles). The main island of Malta measures approximately 27 kilometers (17 miles) in length and 14.5 kilometers (9 miles) in width, covering an area of around 246 square kilometers (95 square miles). Besides the main island, the Maltese archipelago includes the smaller islands of Gozo (67 km²) and Comino (3.5 km²), along with a few tiny islets. Overall, Malta ranks among the world's micro-states and is the smallest member state of the European Union by area.
