Qatar is about 11,571 to 11,586 square kilometers (4,468 to 4,475 square miles) in land area. It is a peninsula extending about 160 km (99 miles) north into the Persian Gulf, with a width varying between 55 and 90 km (34 to 56 miles). The country is mostly flat and desert terrain, bordering Saudi Arabia to the south and surrounded by the Persian Gulf on other sides. Its size is slightly smaller than the US state of Connecticut and about a third the size of Belgium.
