The Gambia is a very small country in West Africa with a total area of about 11,295 to 11,365 square kilometers (around 4,361 to 4,388 square miles). It is a narrow strip of land stretching approximately 450 kilometers (280 miles) along the Gambia River, and its width is less than 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) at its widest point. It is the smallest country on mainland Africa and is almost entirely surrounded by Senegal except for its Atlantic Ocean coastline of about 80 kilometers (50 miles).
