The English Channel has an average depth of about 63 meters (207 feet). Its depth varies, being shallower between Dover and Calais at around 45 meters (148 feet) and deeper in certain areas, reaching its maximum depth of about 174 to 180 meters (571 to 590 feet) at a location known as Hurd's Deep, in the western part of the Channel. Overall, the Channel is relatively shallow compared to other seas, with its deepest natural trench being Hurd's Deep.
