Crocus bulbs should be planted about 7-12 cm (3-4.5 inches) deep in well- drained soil, with the pointed end facing upwards. The general rule of thumb is to plant them at a depth 2 to 3 times the height of the bulb. For lawn areas with larger Dutch hybrid crocuses, planting depth can be around 12 cm (5 inches). Space the bulbs approximately 7-10 cm (around 3-4 inches) apart, depending on variety and planting location such as garden beds or containers. Water well after planting to settle the soil. This guidance applies to spring- flowering crocuses planted in autumn. For autumn-flowering varieties like the saffron crocus, similar depths are recommended, about 10 cm (4 inches) deep in rich, well-drained soil in sunny locations.
