Abdul Kalam earned his first wages during World War II as a young boy by helping his cousin catch bundles of newspapers. At that time, the train halts were suspended at Rameswaram, and newspapers were thrown from the moving train. His cousin, who distributed newspapers, asked Abdul Kalam to assist in collecting these bundles, and this work helped him earn his first salary. Before that, he also earned some money by collecting tamarind seeds and selling them in the market.
