Augustus died of natural causes on August 19, 14 CE, at about age 75. He passed away at his villa in Nola (near Naples), and his death marked the transition of power to his adopted son Tiberius. While ancient sources and later historians debated possible foul play, the consensus in modern scholarship is that his death was natural, with rumors of poisoning arising later but not proven. His passing was followed by a grand funeral and a deification of Augustus, with Tiberius succeeding him as emperor.
