Bob Marley really died from a rare form of skin cancer called acral lentiginous melanoma, which started as a dark lesion under the toenail of his right big toe. Initially, Marley thought it was a soccer injury, but the spot did not heal and was later diagnosed as melanoma in 1977. Although amputation of the toe was recommended, Marley opted for less invasive treatment. The cancer eventually spread aggressively to his lungs, brain, and other organs. In May 1981, while trying to return to Jamaica for his final days, his plane made an emergency stop in Miami where he was admitted to a hospital and died shortly thereafter at age 36. His state funeral was held in Jamaica, where he is buried near his birthplace.
