Dian Fossey died on December 27, 1985. She was murdered in her cabin at the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda. Her death was caused by brutal machete blows to her head and face. The murder scene showed signs of forced entry through a hole cut in the wall, a ransacked cabin with broken glass and overturned furniture, but no valuables were taken, indicating robbery was not the motive. The exact identity of her killer remains unresolved, but it is widely believed that her death was linked to her efforts to protect mountain gorillas from poachers. Fossey had been actively combatting poaching, which had led to tensions with local poachers who opposed her conservation work. She was buried in the graveyard behind her cabin beside her favorite gorilla, Digit, who had also been killed by poachers years earlier.
