Gamora came back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through a version of her from the past timeline. The original Gamora who was sacrificed by Thanos to obtain the Soul Stone in "Avengers: Infinity War" stays dead. However, during the time travel events in "Avengers: Endgame," a 2014 version of Gamora traveled to the present along with Thanos and his army. Unlike the original, this Gamora had not developed the same relationships with the Guardians of the Galaxy and was from an earlier point in the timeline. She survived the final battle because Tony Stark's snap disintegrated Thanos and his army but spared her, likely because she had changed allegiances and was no longer a threat. This past-timeline Gamora is the one who appears in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," where her story continues but with a fractured relationship with the original Guardians team. At the end of that movie, she joins the Ravagers rather than continuing with the Guardians. Zoe SaldaƱa, who originally portrayed Gamora, has said she will not return as the character, but Marvel might recast the role or explore other variants in the multiverse in the future.
