Genghis Khan died in August 1227 during a campaign against the Western Xia kingdom. The exact cause of his death remains uncertain and is the subject of many theories. Some sources state he fell ill with a fever and died within eight days, with possible diseases including bubonic plague, typhoid, or other infectious diseases. Other accounts suggest he might have died from injuries sustained in a fall from his horse, an arrow wound, or even assassination or castration by a Tangut princess, but these more dramatic stories are considered legends or later fabrications. To keep morale and secrecy, his death was kept a closely guarded secret by his followers. After his death, he was buried in a secret location in Mongolia, near the sacred Burkhan Khaldun mountain.
