George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, after being arrested by police in Minneapolis, Minnesota. During the arrest, a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, kneeled on Floyd's neck for over nine minutes while Floyd was handcuffed and lying face-down in the street. Floyd repeatedly said he could not breathe. The prolonged neck compression, restraint, and subdual led to his death, which was ruled a homicide by medical examiners. Although Floyd had underlying health issues such as heart disease and fentanyl intoxication, these were not the direct causes of his death. The essential cause was cardiopulmonary arrest caused by the police restraint and neck compression.
