You got the Pan cape simply by owning and launching Minecraft-no special event, code, or purchase required. It’s the one cape Mojang gives to everyone.
What the Pan cape is
The Pan cape (officially “The Pan Cape!” in Bedrock) is a free cosmetic cape designed to look like a stack of pancakes with butter and syrup. The name is a pun on “pancake,” and it’s the only official cape with no time limit or expiration.
How players receive it
Originally, the Pan cape was tied to the Minecraft Bedrock beta program. Starting with Bedrock Edition 1.16.0, Mojang changed it so every Bedrock player automatically receives the cape just for having the game.
As of May 8, 2025, the same applies to Java Edition: all Java owners-including new purchasers-get the Pan cape automatically with no extra steps.
So if you see the Pan cape on your account, it’s because:
- You launched Minecraft Bedrock at any point after 1.16.0, or
- You own Java Edition and the cape was added to all Java accounts in May 2025.
There’s nothing you did “wrong” or special; it’s intentionally universal.
How to check and equip it
Where you equip it depends on your edition:
- Bedrock Edition : From the main menu, open the Dressing Room , then go to the Capes tab at the bottom left. The Pan cape should appear there; select it to wear it.
- Java Edition : In the Minecraft Launcher, go to Skins , then choose Edit skin or Select a new skin. Your available capes, including the Pan cape, are shown there for selection. You can also manage this via your profile on minecraft.net after signing in with your Microsoft account.
If you don’t see it yet, make sure you’re logged into the correct Microsoft account that owns the game, then restart the launcher or game and check again.
Why some people thought it was “special”
Older guides and forum posts describe the Pan cape as a beta reward because that’s how it started. After Mojang made it universal on Bedrock and later on Java, it became the baseline cape for all players, which is why you can have it without remembering any specific event or code.
