Steve Irwin died on September 4, 2006, after being pierced in the chest by the barb of a short-tail stingray while filming a documentary series called Ocean's Deadliest in the Great Barrier Reef near Port Douglas, Queensland. The stingray's barb caused massive trauma by puncturing his lungs and heart, resulting in fatal injuries. Despite efforts by his crew to perform CPR and rush him to medical help, Irwin was pronounced dead at the scene. His last words were reportedly, "I'm dying." The incident is considered one of the few human fatalities caused by a stingray and was caught on video, though the footage has been kept private by the family.
