Monkey D. Luffy got his scars in two distinct ways:
- The small scar under his left eye was self-inflicted when he was a child. Luffy stabbed himself under the eye to prove his toughness to Shanks and his pirate crew as a way to show his determination to become a pirate.
- The large X-shaped scar on his chest was received during the Marineford War arc. Admiral Akainu, using his magma powers, attacked Jinbe who was protecting the unconscious Luffy. Akainu's magma attack pierced Jinbe and caused a burn that left the X-shaped scar on Luffy's chest. This happened as Jinbe was carrying Luffy away from the battlefield after Luffy was devastated by the death of his brother Ace.
Thus, Luffy’s scars represent significant moments of his history and character development: one as a show of resolve in childhood, and the other as a mark from a near-fatal battle in defense of his friends.
