Osama bin Laden died on May 2, 2011, when he was killed by U.S. Navy SEALs in a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The operation, called Operation Neptune Spear, was a covert mission ordered by President Barack Obama and carried out by a U.S. special operations unit. Bin Laden was shot and killed in his bedroom during the raid, which lasted about 38 minutes. His body was later taken to Afghanistan for identification and then buried at sea in accordance with Islamic practice.
